Eagles jumped on top early but Blue Blood USC just too much
Georgia Southern played their second game in a row in the state of California. This time against one of college football’s blue bloods in the USC Trojans. Like last week, they were competitive early but the Trojans would prove to be too much, winning 59-20.
Southern got off to a hot start with a 32- yard pass to Camden Brown after a fumble on USC’s first drive of the game to take the lead on the Trojans 6-0 early in the first quarter. The Eagles attempted a two point conversion but came up unsuccessful.

After the first drive for the Eagles it was all Trojans with three TD drives in a row. The Trojans would take a 21-6 lead over the Eagles by the end of the first quarter. The scoring started with a 12-yard touchdown pass to Ja’kobi Lane to give the Trojans a 7-6 lead. After that, Makai Lemon hauled in a 62-yard reception to increase the lead to 14-6 in favor of USC followed by another deep play, a 74-yard reception, again by Lemon, to take the score to 21-6.
Georgia Southern however responded at the beginning of the second quarter with a score of their own to make it 21-13 Trojans after another TD from Camden Brown courtesy of a 24-yard pass.

The Trojans weren’t done. USC followed with two quick scores to end the half on a 26-yard field goal and a 14-yard pass to Walker Lyons to take a commanding 31-13 lead into the half.
After the intermission, two more scores from USC then made it 45-13 after a 36-yard touchdown run from Waymond Jordan followed by a one-yard touchdown from Eli Sanders.
Georgia Southern then followed with a 15 play drive that ended in a 13-yard touchdown to Dalen Cobb to make it 45-20. It was all Trojans in the fourth quarter with a five-yard run by Eli Sanders once again and then a 41- yard play from King Miller to finish the game off with a 59-20 final score.
JC French IV ended the game 19-of-35 for 179 passing yards, two touchdowns, and an interception. Camden Brown and Dalen Cobb had solid performances but the receiver room once again lacked depth after their top two targets.
Jamarian Samuel and OJ Arnold led the Eagles with 103 rushing yards combined but couldn’t get the ball into the end zone for a touchdown between the two backs. The Eagles running back room this season has lacked the ability to get the ball in the endzone on positive drives.
Next weekend the Georgia Southern secondary will have to be better after 700+ yards of offense this weekend from USC. This is the second weekend in a row the GSU defense has given up 40+ points on the road.
Georgia Southern will host Jacksonville State next weekend for the home opener in Statesboro.
