Jags Take Down Troy 65-54 in a Packed Mitchell Center
South Alabama takes down bitter rival Troy 65-54 over the weekend in a crowded Mitchell Center, knocking the Trojans out of first, and moving the Jags back to second place in the Sun Belt.
This result extends an impressive streak, where neither team has won on the road in this rivalry since 2021, when South Alabama won at Troy and in Mobile. In the first meeting from this year, Troy took down South Alabama 59-49 in January. As for this game, 5,525 were in the Mitchell Center, the most attended game in the arena since hosting Alabama in November of 2022.

A strong defensive performance for both teams, this one started with South Alabama going up early, attacking the paint. Troy meanwhile would have a hard time finding the basket, most of their points coming from the free throw line. Troy only made 6 field goals the entire first half, and all of them 3-point attempts. They would get some help from a number of South Alabama fouls, but went into the half down 33-26.
South Alabama would score a few points out of the break, but an 8-0 Troy run brought the lead down to two. This game would remain just a one or two possession game for much of the second half.

Troy would grab the lead on a Cooper Campbell free throw late in the second half, but Adam Olsen responded with a three on the Jags’ next possession to give South Alabama a lead they didn’t give up. South Alabama would end the game on 16-3 run, ultimately winning the game by 11. A very impactful margin of victory, as South Alabama would now have the tiebreaker against Troy should the two teams end tied for a seed in the conference tournament.

As a team, South Alabama found a way to win despite, a very unusual number of fouls and a poor day shooting. The Jaguars committed 16 fouls, a season high, and only shot 8-of-29 from three. The Jags made up for it by a much better game in the paint, the Jags had 35 rebounds as a team and 30 points total in the paint.
Individually, South Alabama was led by their three stars Chaze Harris, Jayden Cooper and Adam Olsen. Harris with 17 points, 6 rebounds and 5 assists. Cooper also with 17 points, but just 5 rebounds and 1 assist. Olsen led the way from beyond the arc, shooting 3-of-7 from three, totaling 16 points, 7 rebounds, and 1 assist.
Troy meanwhile had a horrendous day shooting. The Trojans total sat at just 25% as a team, and they went 10-of-42 from beyond the arc. A lot of Troy’s points came from the charity stripe. Troy scored 18 points from free throws, for 78%. They had 13 fouls as a team, and just narrowly out rebounded South Alabama, totaling 39 rebounds to South’s 35.
Individually, it was a one man show for the Trojans, Cooper Campbell scoring nearly half of Troy’s total points. He had 26 points total including seven threes, he added two steals. Thomas Dowd had a decent game as well, on 10 points and 8 rebounds. Codi Campbell led the team in assists with four and added five rebounds. However, he had no points going 0-for-10 from the field with all of those being three point attempts.
This game will help the Jags improve to 20-9 overall, 10-6 in the conference. Troy falls to 18-11 overall, and 10-6 in league play. Both teams are tied for second place along with Marshall. They all three trail Appalachian State by half a game, and can clinch a share of the conference regular season title by winning out.
In order to win out South Alabama will have to beat ULM and Southern Miss in the Mitchell Center this upcoming week, while Troy will return home to host Louisiana and ULM to close out the regular season.
