Following their harrowing 2-1 walk-off victory against Ole Miss, the No.7 Southern Miss Golden Eagles will look to start off on the right foot in conference play as they head to Jonesboro, Arkansas to face the Arkansas State Red Wolves.
It was a pitchers duel up the fifth inning with both Ole Miss and Southern Miss finally finding some offense in their respective half of the fifth inning, Tristian Bissetta hitting his eighth homer for Ole Miss and Kyle Morrison recording his sixth homer for Southern Mississippi. They would remain deadlocked at 1-1 up until the bottom of the ninth.
The Golden Eagles ultimately prevailed after Catcher, Tucker Stockman ripped a single to score Davis Gillespie from second, lifting the Golden Eagles to a 2-1 victory.
The Golden Eagles are off to a scorching 15-2 to start out the 2026 NCAA baseball season. After dropping their first game of the season to UC Santa Barbra, Southern Miss rattled off 11-straight wins before their next loss with two via run rule victory.
Despite posting a .274 batting average as a team, the Golden Eagles have done an excellent job keeping runs off of the board, only allowing 52 runs up to the start of conference play.
On the opposite side, the Red Wolves are sitting at a solid 13-5 record as they welcome the Golden Eagles to Jonesboro.
Arkansas State is coming off of a 12-5 rout of Little Rock.
The Red Wolves were on the board early after a solo home run by Ashton Quiller, his first of the season. Putting Arkansas State at a 1-0 lead.
Little Rock retaliated quickly, scoring three in the bottom of the second off of two doubles by Nico Baumbach and Jake McClure respectively. The score after two sat at 3-1 in favor of Little Rock.
In the fourth, Arkansas State scored an unearned run from an error by Nico Baumbach and tacked on three more in the fifth off an RBI double by Ashton Quiller and a two-run homer by Even Griffis, his first of the season. The Red Wolves scored five unanswered runs over these two innings to recapture the lead at 6-3.
Little Rock would score two more runs in their half of the sixth and seventh but would never recapture the lead. Arkansas State would put the game to bed after a 6 run top of the ninth. The game ended with.a final score of 12-5.
These teams will look to capture early momentum in what is shaping up to be a competitive Sun Belt Conference.
