The James Madison Dukes will begin conference play at home as they welcome the Georgia Southern Eagles to town.
The Dukes head into the game against the Eagles with a 7-8 record, and it’s been a very up-and-down season for them. They lost the first three games of the season, then they won three in a row, then lost two, then won two, then lost one, then won two, and have now lost two in a row heading into this afternoon.
Throughout the season, the Dukes have been led by Junior Josiah Senguin. Senguin is first on the team in hits with 21, first in runs with 13, first in RBIs with 16, first in total bases with 38, and third in batting average at .389.
The Dukes are coming off a 4-2 loss to Radford this past Tuesday, in a low-scoring affair where Radford gained the edge with a three-run fourth inning.
The game started slowly in the first three innings. There were a total of three hits and no runs, neither team was able to gain true momentum.
At the top of the fourth inning, James Madison started with a run by Senguin after Reece Moody laid down a bunt to bring Senguin home. Radford responded in the bottom fourth with four hits and three of those resulting in runs.
After that outburst in the fourth, the next two and a half innings slowed down as there were no runs and only three hits during that stretch, similar to the first three innings of the game.
Radford scored again in the bottom seventh after a groundout, and JMU responded in the top of the eighth after a homerun by Senguin for the last score of the game.
Senguin was responsible for both of JMU’s runs during that game.
Georgia Southern is coming into this series winning three in a row, even though the record may reflect otherwise. The Eagles have won three games in a row, with the latest being a 6-1 victory over Clemson. In their win over Clemson, all six of their runs were recorded by six different players. All seven runs by both teams occurred in the second inning. Four of Georgia Southern’s six runs were due to a home run by Sean White.
Despite the three straight wins, they only have a 5-11 record on the season, a season that started with them dropping their first eight games.
For Georgia Southern, they have been led by White, who this season has 21 hits and has a batting average of .344.
This will be the Dukes’ first series against an in-conference opponent. The Dukes will look to respond to the loss at Radford to get back in the win column.
