James Madison Sweeps Georgia Southern
After falling down early, the James Madison Dukes took control in the second inning and didn’t look back as they defeated the Georgia Southern Eagles 12-6 on Sunday afternoon. The victory for the Dukes completed their three-game sweep over the Eagles.
The Dukes completely dominated the bottom of the second inning, and saw a 2-0 deficit turn into a 6-2 lead.
Just like Saturday, the Eagles got on the board in the first inning when Jack Myers doubled to the left field corner and Mason Gazaway ran in for the score. The Eagles tacked on another run in the second inning when freshman Bennett Edwards drilled a solo home run to take a 2-0 lead.

The home run was the first one of Edwards career.
The Dukes took over from there. After Jack Guerrero hit a double, Clay Thompson hit another double and picked up an RBI as Guerrero scored. Thompson scored a few moments later as Jack Cannizzaro grounded out to shortstop.
Wyatt Campbell scored off a Kyle Langley single, and Ike Schmidly hit a single to center field and 2 RBI as Ben Barrow and Jack Anderson scored. The final run of the second inning came from a sacrifice bunt from Reece Moody as Langley got the run.

Georgia Southern did have a response in the third inning as Sean White hit a single through the left side for James McCoy to score, and Nico Senese singled to center field, and Myers took advantage and scored. Georgia Southern cut the lead to 6-4.
After a few scoreless innings, James Madison got back on the scoreboard in the bottom fifth inning off a sacrifice fly by Cannizzaro so Moody could score.
James Madison extended their lead in the bottom sixth, led by Langley as his run and RBI hit saw the lead extend to 9-4.
The seventh and eighth innings ended with James Madison putting more runs on the board. Thompson took advantage of a passed ball in the seventh to run in for the score. In the eighth, a Guerrero single and a Thompson fielder’s choice saw two more runs added.
Georgia Southern scored twice in the ninth on an RBI double by James McCoy and a run-scoring groundout to bring the score a little closer, but not enough to make a difference as JMU pulls out the win.
James Madison got production from several players, such as Langley, Schmidly, Moody, Thompson, and Cannizzaro, produced two RBI’s. Guerrero added the other RBI.
White led the Eagles with two of the team’s six RBIs.
This victory for the Dukes marked their first time since joining the Sun Belt that they opened conference play with a sweep. This was also the sixth straight home victory for the Dukes over the Eagles.
The Dukes have taken the last three series against Georgia Southern, with 2024 and this year being sweeps and last season being 2-1.
The Dukes will remain at home as they welcome George Washington to Harrisonburg on Wednesday.
Georgia Southern will see Kennesaw State on Tuesday at 6 pm.
