Troy Hires NC State Assistant Adam Howard as Next Head Coach
Troy has announced it has officially hired former Trojan assistant and current NC State assistant Adam Howard as its next men’s basketball head coach. Howard replaces Scott Cross, who took the Georgia Tech opening earlier this offseason.
Howard spent one season with NC State, joining Will Wade’s staff in Raleigh. The Wolfpack finished with a 20-14 record, losing in the First Four of the NCAA Tournament.
Prior to joining Wade at NC State, Howard spent three seasons working under Fred Hoiberg at Nebraska. Over those three seasons, the Cornhuskers went 60-41, marking their most wins over a three-year stretch up to that point.
Howard also brings Sun Belt experience, spending four seasons as an assistant at South Alabama. During that stretch, the Jaguars went 75-51, and Howard was promoted to associate head coach for the 2021-22 season, his final year in Mobile. While at South Alabama, he played a key role on the defensive side, helping the Jaguars rank in the top 50 nationally in field goal defense in each of his final two seasons.
He is also familiar with the Troy program, having spent the 2015-17 seasons there under Phil Cunningham. During that time, Troy reached the NCAA Tournament in 2016-17 and recorded its most wins in a season since 2004.
Howard has also made stops at Morehead State, Southern Miss and Tennessee. While at Tennessee, he played a key role in signing Kevin Punter and Tariq Owens, two players who went on to have strong college careers. He was also on staff at Southern Miss when the program made back-to-back NIT appearances from 2012-14.
As a player, Howard spent four seasons at Western Kentucky, appearing in three postseason tournaments. In 2008, he helped lead the Hilltoppers to a Sweet 16 appearance.
He replaces Cross, who led the Trojans to back-to-back NCAA Tournament appearances, five straight 20-win seasons and multiple conference regular-season championships before departing for Georgia Tech.
