Georgia State Falls To Texas State In Low-Scoring Affair
Texas State takes the series against Georgia Southern after an afternoon pitchers’ duel was broken up in the eighth inning by a home run, lifting the Bobcats to a 1-0 victory over the Panthers.
The Panthers started left-hander Jake Hembree for his seventh start of the season, holding onto a 3-3 record so far this year.
Hembree carried a no-hitter into the sixth inning before a Jackson Cotton single through the right side gave Texas State some life near the end of the ballgame. The redshirt sophomore would not return in the seventh inning, tossing seven strikeouts and allowing just one hit.
There wasn’t much luck on the offensive side for Georgia State either, only able to muster up three hits against Texas State righty Sam Hall as he made his fifth start of the season. Hall pitched a season-high six innings and struck out 10 Georgia State batters.
The Bobcats broke the stalemate in the top of the eighth inning with a Jackson Cotton home run, put Texas State out in front 1-0 and would remain that way until the end of the game. The freshman outfielder is riding a four-game home run streak and has his ninth of the season, putting him two away from tying teammate Chase Mora’s freshman record of 11 in a season.
Georgia State had one last gasp in the bottom of the ninth inning on two outs when Lucas Grantham got on base because of Texas State’s third error of the afternoon. Grantham would advance to second because of that error and then to third off a wild pitch to put a tying run 90 feet away.
But a Cooper Milford groundout would seal the win for Texas State and take the weekend series in Atlanta, the win going to freshman Wade Cooper.
Georgia State will try to salvage the series with a win before hitting the road, with the game starting just around brunch time after a time change was announced earlier in the week.
