Georgia State claims Game 1 of the Easter weekend series with ULM, defeating the Warhawks, 10-7, behind 6.2 innings of relief from Will Bartowski and a three-hit day from John Beverley.
This game marks the first conference win for Georgia State since March 22nd and snaps a five-game losing streak for the Panthers.
Georgia State drew first blood off a John Beverley bunt single to score Hunter Carlson, giving Carlson his 25th run of the season and putting the Panthers on top early. A sacrifice bunt from Bailey Carter and a single by Sam Silas added three more runs in the first inning to make it a 4-0 ballgame.
ULM would get two runs back in its half of the first inning by way of a Marcus Aranda 2-run homer—his sixth of the season. Garrett Weithorn hit an RBI double in the following inning, pulling the Warhawks within one of the Panthers and giving Weithorn his sixth extra base hit on the season.
After a Dayne Wray single tied things up 4-4, Micah Dean would pop up in the scoring once more with a solo home run that put ULM on top in the fourth inning.
Louisiana-Monroe tacked on another to make it six unanswered since the Panthers went up 4-0 in the first inning. Sam Silas would get one back for Georgia State with a solo home run, his first of the season and his third RBI of the game.
Adam Haber picked up his 15th RBI of the year on a single that scored Jae Williams and tied the game 6-6 in the fifth inning.
After Georgia State pitcher Brian Crooms got into a bases-loaded situation in the bottom of the seventh, he was replaced by right-hander Will Bartowski. Bartowski limited the damage, only allowing one run to score off a wild pitch and put ULM ahead 7-6.
John Beverley picked up his third hit of the night and 20th RBI of the season, scoring Willis Maginnis to tie the game up once more in the eighth inning.
The score would head into extra innings after nine was not enough to break the stalemate. The Panthers were 0-1 in extra innings this season entering Thursday, and ULM was playing in their first extended game of the season.
Neither team would budge until the 13th inning, when Austin Killingsworth ripped a single through the right side of the infield to break the tie and put the Panthers in front, 8-7.
Cole Griffith added some insurance with a base-clearing 2-RBI double, making it a 10-7 ballgame and giving Griffith his fourth double of the season. ULM could not match the deficit this time and Georgia State would go on to win over a strong conference opponent.
Will Bartowski came in relief in the middle of the seventh inning and would stay in over the next 6 2/3 innings it would take to finish the game. The senior only allowed one hit and four walks, striking out ten batters en route to his first win of the season.
Due to inclement weather in the forecast for Saturday, Georgia State and ULM have elected to play a double-header on Friday. First pitch for Game 2 is scheduled for 3 p.m. EST, Game 3 will follow the conclusion of Game 2. For updates on start times, follow ULM Baseball on X.
