Georgia State Hires Jon Cremins as Next Head Coach
Georgia State has hired Vanderbilt assistant Jon Cremins as their next men’s basketball head coach. This will be Cremins’ first head coaching job in Division I college basketball.
Cremins, a longtime assistant, will join after spending the previous two seasons at Vanderbilt under head coach Mark Byington. The Commodores are coming off one of their best seasons in recent memory, going 27-9 and finishing tied for fourth in the SEC. Vanderbilt fell in the second round of the NCAA Tournament to Nebraska in what many consider one of the best games of the tournament.
He is a familiar face to Sun Belt basketball fans, as Cremins spent time as an assistant for Byington at both Georgia Southern and James Madison. While at James Madison, Cremins helped lead the Dukes to a 32-4 record in 2023-24 and a win over Wisconsin in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. The Dukes also knocked off Michigan State in the regular season and were ranked in the AP poll. James Madison won 50 total games in the three other seasons with Cremins as an assistant.
During his two seasons on staff in Statesboro, Georgia Southern went 41-15, with back-to-back 20-plus win seasons. In the 2018-19 season, the Eagles ranked fourth in the country in field goal percentage, as well as top 15 in scoring.
Prior to joining Byington’s staff, Cremins spent a season as an assistant at USC Upstate. He also served as the head coach at Spartanburg Methodist for the two seasons before that. While leading the junior college program, Cremins posted a 55-11 record and led the team to two NJCAA Division I championship appearances. The Pioneers also had elite offenses, similar to his time at Georgia Southern.
Before his first head coaching stint, he spent time as an assistant at Kennesaw State and Southeast Missouri. He also spent two years as an assistant under his uncle, Bobby Cremins, at Charleston.
He is a graduate of Valdosta State, where he also began his coaching career as a graduate assistant.
With Cremins now the head coach, he and Georgia State will quickly turn their attention to roster building as the transfer portal opens April 7.
