After ten hours of baseball and rain delays, Georgia State pulled out a series victory against ULM on Friday despite splitting the doubleheader. The two teams agreed to play the final two games of the series on Good Friday due to incoming inclement weather on Saturday.
In the first game, the Warhawks jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning after a Marcus Aranda 2-run home run. Aranda’s home run marked his seventh on the season and third game in a row going long, also eclipsing 30 career runs.
Georgia State responded by scoring seven runs over the next two innings to give them a 7-2 lead in the fourth inning, chasing starting pitcher Brandt Corley after just three innings of work.
The left-handed pitcher marked his second-shortest outing of the season, giving up five runs off eight hits and striking out four batters.
Georgia State kicked off the scoring with an Austin Killingsworth groundout that scored Nick Garagozzo from third and was capped off with a Wesley Bass double into left-center field that scored Austin Killingsworth.
ULM would answer back in a big way, scoring four runs in the fourth inning and an additional one in the fifth to tie things up 7-7 at the midway point.
Jake Hembree got the starting nod for the Panthers in game two, lasting three and one-third innings. Hembree finished the day giving up six runs on three hits, issuing seven walks and striking out only two. The lefty starter was coming off a career game last weekend against Texas State.
Micah Dean singled to center field to bring home Jackson Landry and Garrett Wiethorn, pushing the Warhawks into the lead 9-7.
Nick Garagozzo doubled down the left field line in the sixth inning, scoring Sam Silas and John Beverley to tie the game back up 9-9.
The matchup would go into extra innings for the second straight day, tied 9-9 and with another game on deck.
In the twelfth inning, Garrett Wiethorn sent a double into right-center field and brought home Landry Jackson for his second run of the game to bring things to a close. ULM forced a rubber match in game two of the doubleheader after a six-hour game one.
After a scoreless opening frame in game two, both teams exchanged runs to make it 1-1 before Georgia State blew things open and scored six unanswered runs. The scoring run was capped off by a Willis Maginnis RBI single in the sixth to make the score 7-1.
Jackson Landry would get one back for the Warhawks in the home half of the sixth inning, scratching Kade Dupont across the plate to start chipping away at the Panther lead.
But a Lucus Grantham RBI single and Austin Killingsworth’s 3-RBI put the game out of reach for ULM, losing to the Panthers 12-3 in game two and giving the series win to Georgia State
Georgia State will take on Wofford in their midweek matchup to kick off a five-game homestand for the Panthers, while ULM will take on Mississippi Valley State on Tuesday.
