The offenses came to play on Tuesday night, Wofford getting the best of Georgia State with a 7-4 victory in Atlanta. The Terriers are 3-0 against Sun Belt opponents since 2023 and are 2-0 against Georgia State in their last two meetings, both games being held in Atlanta.
Wofford got the scoring started in the second inning with a sacrifice fly-out by Lucas Manning, tallying his 10th RBI of the season and bringing in Andrew Manelly to put the Terriers up 1-0.
Georgia State sent graduate Brian Crooms to the mound in his first start since March 13th against Marshall, where he allowed five runs off six hits in 4 1/3 innings of work. The right-hander went three innings against the Terriers, striking out two while allowing two runs off four hits.
The Panthers would strike back twice in the home half of the second inning, with one run coming home off a Sam Silas base hit that scored Austin Killingsworth. Wofford transfer Lucas Grantham grounded into a fielder’s choice to advance Silas to third base, coming around to score after a throwing error from the shortstop.
Wofford evened the score in the next inning with a Marc Quarrie double that scored Niko Brini, Quarrie notching his fourth straight game with at least one hit and one RBI. The junior outfielder surpassed 15 RBIs on the season and slashed his third extra-base hit in four games.
The Terriers slowly built up a five-run lead over the next four innings and scored six unanswered runs while keeping the ball in the yard, racking up seven hits as a team. Wofford’s scoring run was capped off with a Marc Quarrie sacrifice fly-out for his second RBI of the game and pushed the Terrier lead to 7-2 in the sixth inning.
Four of the seven runs scored by Wofford came via the sacrifice.
John Beverley got two back for Georgia State in the bottom of the seventh inning with a two-RBI single up the left side, putting the Panthers within striking distance and cutting the lead to 7-4. Beverley tallied his seventh multi-RBI game of the season and improved his batting average to .365, putting him at 10th in the Sun Belt.
Wofford sent seven pitchers to the mound throughout the game, turning to reliever John Gray in the eighth inning of a two-run ballgame. Gray pitched two innings of relief and struck out two Panther batters en route to their eighth victory in ten games.
Georgia State is heading in the opposite direction as we enter the downswing of the regular season, 3-7 in their last ten matchups and are 1-5 in midweek contests this season.
The Panthers will continue their homestand with a series against conference foe James Madison, looking to follow up last weekend’s series win against ULM.
