Georgia State Swept After Brunch Blowout to Texas State
It was a brunch beatdown for Georgia State on Sunday, losing 12-3 in game three of their weekend series against Texas State, completing the sweep for the Bobcats. The Panthers did not lead at any point in the series and were outscored 31-9 over the three games.
Texas State swatted 11 home runs over the weekend, leading to 16 RBIs and accounting for more than half of the runs in the series for the Bobcats.
Georgia State sent senior Cole Roberts to the bump for Sunday’s series finale. The right-hander had been knocked around in his last two starts, giving up a combined nine earned runs off of 11 hits and walking five batters.
Texas State drew first blood with a solo home run from Dawson Park in the second inning of Sunday morning’s contest. The sophomore infielder would hit a second solo home run later in the fourth inning to give him nine on the year and his second multi-home run game of the season.
Park was named the 38th best shortstop prospect by D1 Baseball on March 27th. He rose to the occasion over the weekend by batting 4-for-10 (.400) with three extra-base hits that included two home runs and notched four RBIs.
Park’s solo shot would open up the floodgates for the other Bobcat batters, who went on to score 11 unanswered runs against Georgia State. Most of the scoring would occur in the sixth inning after the Panthers starter, Cole Roberts, was replaced by freshman left-hander Lewis Cooper. Roberts tossed five complete innings and allowed five earned runs off of eight hits while striking out six.
Star slugger Chase Mora popped up in the stat sheet once more, with two RBIs on the day. One of those RBI’s came off a double in the sixth inning, giving him five on the year. A Jackson Cotton two-RBI single in the seventh inning would turn up the heat for Georgia State, putting them at risk of being run-ruled for a second game this series.
Texas State sent ace left-hander Jesus Tovar to face the Panthers, throwing six scoreless innings and only allowing three hits while striking out five. This game marks Tovar’s fifth 5+ strikeout game and his fourth start of the season allowing 3-hits or fewer, lowering his ERA to 2.48 on the season so far.
Cole Griffith would single into right field to bring home Nick Garagozzo, Willis Maginnis and John Beverley to put the Panthers on the board 11-3, staving off the run rule. Griffith was only credited with two RBIs as John Beverley crossed the plate due to an error from the right fielder.
Texas State got one back in their half of the eighth inning. Ethan Farris reached on a fielder’s choice that scored Manny Salas and put the cherry on top of a 12-3 win over the Panthers. The Bobcats extend their win streak to seven and have won six straight conference games following their sweep by ULM.
Georgia State will hit the road and head to Athens, where they’ll face off against the #4-ranked Georgia Bulldogs for an intrastate midweek contest.
