No.12 Southern Mississippi heads to Biloxi for clash with Nicholls State

After dropping two of three at the hands of Sun Belt rival Arkansas State, Southern Mississippi heads southbound to Biloxi, MS for their second matchup of the season with Nicholls State.

The Golden Eagles opened up Sun Belt play over the weekend but look to put that behind them after a tough start to open up their conference schedule. This is the second time since joining the Sun Belt in 2022 that Southern Mississippi opens up conference play with a losing record.

Despite losing the series to the Red Wolves, the Golden Eagles put up 14 runs across the three games in Jonesboro, AR. This is the third most runs put up by Southern Mississippi to open up Sun Belt competition.

Nicholls State is headed to Biloxi after a poor start to their Southland Conference schedule. The Colonels sit at an 11-11 record and riding a three-game losing streak after being swept at home by conference newcomer, University of Texas Rio Grande Valley.

Nicholls State and Southern Mississippi will be facing off for the second time this season and the 11th time overall. The last matchup ending in a 3-2 upset win for the Colonels in Hattiesburg. Additionally, this loss for the Golden Eagles broke an 11-game win streak.

Historically, the series is held by the Golden Eagles, but the Colonels have captured the last two matchups. Southern Mississippi leads the series 6-4 in 11 games, the only oddity being a 1-1 tie back in 2015. Nicholls State has never played at home against the Golden Eagles, either playing away or at a neutral site, they have however, won the last two neutral site meetings.

The pitchers for this midweek will be Nicholls State right-handed Junior, Dawson Richard and Southern Mississippi right-handed Freshman, Dylan Causey.
