This season, Troy lost four of its five starters from its March Madness team, only returning Thomas Dowd. Instead of bringing in a large group of freshmen and transfers, Cross chose to develop players from last season’s roster, and it paid off. All five starters, along with key bench players who played consistent minutes, were on last year’s team.
He led Troy to a 22-11 (12-6) record, winning the league outright in the regular season and capturing the conference tournament title to return to the NCAA Tournament for the second straight season. The Trojans fell to Nebraska in blowout fashion in the first round of the tournament.
Dowd and fellow junior forward Victor Valdes led the Trojans this season, both earning all-conference honors. Dowd was the only player in the Sun Belt averaging a double-double, while Valdes led the team in scoring with 14.8 points per game. The backcourt of Cobi and Cooper Campbell also has eligibility remaining, and their father is an assistant on Cross’ staff.
The 2024-25 season saw Troy win its first conference championship under Cross. The Trojans went 23-11 (13-5 Sun Belt) and were part of a four-way tie for the regular-season conference title. They went on to win the conference tournament and advance to the NCAA Tournament, where they lost to Kentucky in the first round in a game closer than the score indicated.
After struggling during his first two seasons with the Trojans, Cross found his footing in the 2021-22 season, guiding Troy to a 20-12 record and a CBI appearance. The following two seasons also resulted in 20-win campaigns, reaching the mark late in the regular season or during the conference tournament.
Cross arrived at Troy after a controversial firing at UT Arlington and led the Trojans to five straight 20-win seasons. He spent 12 seasons with the Mavericks, winning 225 games and posting better than a 58% winning percentage both overall and in conference play. Cross led his alma mater to an NCAA Tournament appearance and multiple NIT bids. He was fired after winning 73 games in his final three seasons.
Cross takes over after Stoudamire was let go by the Yellow Jackets. In his three seasons in Atlanta, Stoudamire posted a 42-55 (19-39 ACC) record. This season, Georgia Tech finished 11-20, winning just two conference games.
