Georgia Tech is searching for a new head coach after firing Damon Stoudamire on March 8 following three seasons in Atlanta. Stoudamire, the former Pacific head coach and Boston Celtics assistant, went 42-55 (19-39 ACC) during his time with the Yellow Jackets. This season, Georgia Tech finished 11-20, winning only two conference games.
Cross is in the midst of another conference-winning season at Troy, leading the Trojans to a 22-11 (12-6 Sun Belt) record. Troy won the regular season outright after entering the final day of the regular season with the potential for a seven-way tie for first place. The Trojans then went on to win the conference tournament title, clinching back-to-back automatic bids to March Madness.
During his seven seasons at Troy, Cross has led the Trojans to five straight 20-win seasons. After struggling during his first two seasons with the program, Cross found his footing in the 2021-22 season, guiding Troy to a 20-12 record and a CBI appearance. The following two seasons were similar, reaching the 20-win mark either late in the regular season or during the postseason.
Troy’s Scott Cross, Belmont’s Casey Alexander and Furman’s Bob Richey are all candidates for the Georgia Tech job, sources told @CBSSports. TBD if other finalists will emerge in the coming days. Was told GT’s total NIL package, w/ rev-share, will be slightly north of $5.5 million

In the 2024-25 season, Troy won its first conference championship under Cross. The Trojans went 23-11 (13-5 Sun Belt) and were part of a four-way tie for the regular-season conference title. They went on to win the first conference tournament in the league’s new format and clinched a bid to the NCAA Tournament. Troy went on to lose to Kentucky in the first round in a game that was closer than the final score suggested.
Before arriving at Troy, Cross was the subject of a controversial firing at UT Arlington. Cross spent 12 seasons with the Mavericks, winning 225 games and posting better than a 58% winning percentage both overall and in conference play. He led UTA to an NCAA Tournament appearance and multiple NIT appearances, including a quarterfinal run in his second-to-last season. Cross was fired after winning a total of 73 games in his final three seasons.
After his firing from UTA and before landing at Troy, Cross spent one season at TCU as an assistant.
Another interesting note regarding Cross’ fit at Georgia Tech is the athletic director who originally hired him at Troy. Brent Jones spent eight years as the athletic director for the Trojans and is now the deputy athletic director at Georgia Tech.
One thing to keep an eye on here is Georgia Tech’s associate AD hired Scott Cross at Troy. https://t.co/AWQZal7a7o
